NASA and drones lead to efficient farming, showcased at World Ag Expo ag drones
What looks like the latest farm-inspired gaming app, is actually a glimpse into the future of farming.
“It saves an enormous amount of time for the farmer by scouting any field on any day at any time,” say Eric Thompson, a flight operations manager with Aerovironment — one of hundreds of companies showcasing their innovations at the World Ag Expo in Tulare this week.
Thompson uses a tablet to access data and images gathered by a Quantix Hybrid drone, to help farmers pinpoint issues with their crops.
Thompson says growers can zoom in within inches of a plant
The drone can cover 100 acres in 10 minutes.
Compare that, to driving or walking across an entire field to examine tree after tree.
“It’s new technology that’s being brought in the industry to grow and create our food,” Thompson said.
A lot of this, made possible through data and programs from NASA.
“We have understood this for a long time that it can be done,” says Jim Bridenstine, an Administrator with NASA.
While people usually identify the agency with space exploration, it’s technology is also being applied to farming.
NASA is testing out some of its programs on University of California extension farms in the Central Valley right now.
The goal: use data from its 19 satellites to help farmers reduce water use, increase crop yields, and protect nitrates in the soil, so they don’t get washed away when fields are over-watered.
Bridenstine says that, in the future, it can even help water managers decide where to allocate water from the Sierra Nevada.
“What’s gonna be more impressive, one day we’ll take this technology and scale it for the us and the entire world ultimately enabling our ag industry to feed even more people than before,” Bridenstine said.
