UAV equipped with lidar for highway expansion

FDG-130X UAV lidar for highway expansion

The highway planning survey and design institute adopts the scanning technology of multi-rotor UAV equipped with lidar. The measurement work that originally took 3 months was completed safely in just over 10 days without affecting normal traffic. The emergence of UAV lidar surveying and mapping technology has brought convenience to such common field surveying and mapping, shortened operation time and improved efficiency.

Lidar is mounted on the landing gear of the drone, and the lidar sensor head below emits and receives millions of laser pulses per second to make precise measurements of the ground.

LiDAR scanning is a global trend in surveying and mapping that will significantly reduce manual mapping. Compared with manual surveying and mapping, its biggest advantage is that it does not need to block the road, while ensuring the safety of the staff. Especially for reconstruction and expansion projects, traditional methods will not only occupy lanes to create blockages, but under the interference of vehicles, the efficiency will be low, and the staff will be at risk.

In the past, 70 kilometers of roads were measured by more than 20 people for two months; but using lidar scanning, 5 flight operations were completed in 3 days, and the surveying and mapping work was completed in only 9 hours.

Second, lidar scans are very accurate. The reconstruction and expansion project has both new lanes and old lanes. In order to seamlessly connect the old and the new, the measurement must be accurate. For example, the cost of paving asphalt and cement concrete 1 cm and 5 cm is very different. Such a long road, once the measurement is wrong, the loss will be even worse.

At the same time, Lidar can successfully complete the measurement of cliffs without roads, dense forests, swamp wetlands or other inaccessible places. It can also provide basic data for the three-dimensional reality model, which is convenient for construction, maintenance and operation management.
